As the global population continues to rapidly age, it is becoming increasingly evident that this demographic shift is being driven by a number of factors. Longer life expectancy, technological advancements, and improved healthcare have all contributed to a larger proportion of the population aged 60 and above. This has had a significant impact on the global economy, with the aging population requiring a greater level of care and resources. The rapidly aging population presents both opportunities and challenges. On the one hand, it is a testament to the successes of modern medicine and a sign of improved quality of life. However, it also brings to the fore the need for governments to develop and implement sound policies that are tailored to the needs of the elderly, including ensuring access to healthcare, financial security, and adequate housing. In addition, it is necessary to ensure that those aged 60 and above are able to remain active and engaged members of society, with access to meaningful activities and relationships.
This demographic shift brings about a number of implications for healthcare, most notably the rising prevalence non-communicable disease such as hypertension, stroke, diabetes and dementia emerging as a major concern. Remote healthcare has become increasingly important in recent years by providing access to modern healthcare, communication, and entertainment, technology has been instrumental in improving the quality of life for these individuals. For example, telehealth has enabled elderly and those with dementia to receive medical advice and guidance remotely. Collaboration between healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and the public is also essential in order to maximize the benefits remote healthcare can bring, while also minimizing any potential drawbacks. This could include initiatives such as developing evidence-based guidelines and providing education and training to healthcare professionals on how to use digital tools and telemedicine effectively.
School of Nursing (SoN) at Mae Fah Luang University envisions itself as a leading institution of nursing education and a reliable resource for nursing education in the Greater Mekong Subregion. SoN has recognized the importance of bringing together experts from various disciplines to discuss best practices, research findings, and new developments. An international academic conference has been organized to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise, promote collaboration, and support policy development and practice that promote the wellbeing of the elderly and individuals with dementia in the digital age. In addition, the conference will provide education and development in the field of aging and dementia for healthcare professionals by combining traditional learning formats with technological advancements. This program also seeks to establish a network between nursing professionals and other health care disciplines that are involved in elderly care, both nationally and internationally. By collaborating on this project, essential knowledge will be gained in order to support the global aging population effectively.
